The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Tranmere 2-0 Grimsby

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 09/12/2000

In a scrappy affair at Prenton Park, the Mariners succumbed to their fifth successive away defeat against a dogged Tranmere Rovers side. Grimsby failed to register a single shot on target in the first half as Tranmere dominated the opening exchanges.

After 21 minutes, Tranmere's Scott Taylor missed a golden chance to put Rovers in the lead, although worse was to come from the Mariners Stuart Campbell. The young Scotsman fluffed an excellent opportunity to put the Mariners in front after 49 minutes when he fired wide of an open goal. Rovers' pressure finally paid off three minutes later when Sean Flynn put Andy Parkinson through on the Grimsby goal. Parkinson slammed a shot to the right of Town 'keeper Danny Coyne, leaving the former Tranmere man with no chance. Although Coyne again produced a string of fine saves - notably on the stroke of half-time when he turned away a Wayne Allison header, and an excellent 64th minute tip over from Parkinson - he will be disappointed not to have done better with Tranmere's second. The Welshman seemed a little surprised when a Jason Koumas shot squeezed past him and eventually crept just inside his right-hand post after 68 minutes. Grimsby seemed to buck there ideas up a little after concedeing the second, with Donovan, Burnett and an injury-time blast from Tony Gallimore all going close. The Mariners have now gone six matches without a victory and find themselves in the bottom three once again. Defenders Knut Anders Fostervold and John McDermott were both forced to leave the match through injury as the Grimsby injury crisis continues, although long-term casualty Richard Smith appeared to come through the match with no ill-effects. A full match report will follow shortly.
