THE MARINERS came from behind twice to snatch a 2-2 draw against their Swedish opposition in Town's first pre-season friendly, with midfielders Stuart Campbell and Alan Pouton on target for Grimsby.

A very good friendly match which surely impressed the 400 spectators against a competent Swedish side took place on 'Ystads idrottsplats'. The Swedes deservedly took the lead after 35 minutes through Jonas 'Taggen' Andersson.

Andersson had been nicely played through by Ernad Kovacevic. But only a few minutes later the midfielder Stuart Campbell scored the equaliser for the Mariners! But just before the two sides changed sides Johannes Berglund gave Ystad the lead once more.

In the second half Grimsby dominated the match and YIF had to site back and defend their lead. In the middle of the half Alan Pouton netted a deserved equaliser. According to the Swedish newspaper 'Ystads Allehanda', goalkeeper Mattias Svensson put in an outstanding display for the home team to thwart the Grimsby Town attack.

Fredrik Görefält and Christian Andersson in the Swedish defence put in a good performance that might have impressed the watching Lennie Lawrence. In midfield the goalscorer Ernad Kovacevic also played well, and dominated the game - especially in the first half.

"A good training match. I think we played a very good match and it looks promising ahead of the autumn campaign," said a very pleased YIF coach Nils-Erik Persson after the encounter.

Grimsby Starting XI: Coyne, McDermott, Pouton, Groves, D Smith, Butterfield, Willems, Burnett, Campbell, Allen, Jevons.
