Oster Scandal!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 26/03/2003

JOHN Oster has played his last game for Grimsby Town and despite Sunderland saying he can have a free transfer, the Grimsby Town board will not pay the minimal amount needed to sign him.

Peter Furneaux said that relegation will cost Town £1-million but are declining to pay up for one of the men who could prevent that, said the Grimsby Telegraph who revealed the situation today.

The Grimsby Telegraph also revealed that relegation rivals Stoke City are preparing to steal Oster from under Paul Groves' nose and ex-Town boss Lennie Lawrence also keeping his eye out on the situation and if Town do not move he is likely to.

Sunderland want to recoup the £25,000 in wages they have subsidised during Oster's two loan spells in Cleethorpes. But that figure would not represent a fee and could be paid in stages.

The transfer deadline is tomorrow at 5pm and Groves will have to sign Oster by then or lose out forever.

In other news, Middlesbrough defender Kevin George is back at Blundell Park for another trial and will play in the reserves against at Mansfield today.
