Same Old Story

THE Mariners tried to get back on track after last week's thumping at the hands of Brentford but it was the same old story for Buckley's men.

Town lined up 4-4-2 with Bennett continuing at right back. Heywood and Newey were out in the middle of the back line and Hegarty made his first start of the season at left back.

The midfield lineup was unchanged with Llewellyn on the left, Hunt and Heslop in the centre and Till on the right. Butler and Taylor continued their partnership up front.

Fit again Danny Boshell had to be content with a place on the bench, as were Bore, North, Montgomery and Clarke.

Chesterfield were also looking to put last week's disappointing defeat behind them. Their starting lineup was as follows: Carson, Downes, Page, Austin, Goodall, Niven, Harsley, Kerry, Currie, Lowry, Ward

In the opening first 20 minutes Chesterfield were slightly on top with good chances from Ward and Lowry.

Town's never really threatened the Spireites goal but Till did well to get a couple of decent crosses in, but nobody was able to latch onto them.

Town's best chance of the game fell to top scorer Hunt. After a shamble in the penalty area the ball fell to him but he was unable to put enough on the shot to beat Carson.

Newey playing at centre half in place of the injured Hope, surprisingly had a good first half dealing with the aerial threat, and Heywood looked the part again. But it was a mistake by makeshift left back Hegarty that lead to the only goal of the game. Hegarty lost possession in his own half to Currie. Currie played a good ball to Ward and he finished fairly easily to put the Spireites in front.

For Town the second half was a poor showing until the final minutes when Bore and North were finally introduced, after constant pressure from Chesterfield, but were still unable to create clear cut chances.

Chesterfield deserved their win but they are certainly not the best team we will play this year. They were more organised then us and it showed. Our tactics and team selection left a lot to be desired and again there was no end product from the front men.

We can only hope that the players can turn it around and give a great underdog performance on Wednesday night against premier league opposition Blackburn Rovers.
