MIKE Newell’s Mariners travel south on Saturday in an attempt to take their first three points against newly promoted Exeter.

The Opposition

Overview

After a five year absence Exeter return to the Football League in fine form already sitting five points off top spot and with ten games gone it’s a far cry from their narrow relegation back in 2003 (that season Premierships new love story Hull finished 13th). With only a point separating them and the then continual Lazarus’s Carlisle, Exeter spent five years in The Conference before their 1-0 win at Wembley in the play-off final against Cambridge Utd in front of over 42,500 saw them return back to the Football League this year. With such a good start and the momentum carried through from last year Exeter can boast a good following with one of the best average attendances in the league and with a confidence now rippling through the team it will be hard work for anyone to derail their good start. Undefeated in their last 4 games they can also boast 9 points out of the last possible 9 including 3-0 wins over Gillingham and a 4-1 win over Macclesfield.

The Team

Manager Paul Tisdale (above) was happy with being able to keep the vast majority of last season's squad together. The two casualties were Lee Elam who returned to the Blue Square League with Altrincham while at the end of August young midfielder George Friend signed for Wolves for an undisclosed fee. Tisdale also added in several places including what maybe seen as the coup of the season in signing the former Ipswich and Sunderland striker Marcus Stewart whose totalled up transfer fees come to a touch under £7 million may be a little long in the tooth now at 36 but with his experience it could be a masterstroke for the young Exeter manager, though 9 games have now passed the former Tractor boy without a goal to his credit. Besides Stewart the Grecians have added two players formerly at Gray’s Athletic. Jack Obersteller and Ben Watson have both joined the South Western outfit as well as Craig McAllister and the now loaned out Manny Panther (Panther in his last 3 games has received 2 red cards while he has been loaned out to Rushden). Tisdale will have been delighted to keep of top goal scorer Richard Logan with 18 goals from 28 starts last season. The former Lincoln loanee had had trouble finding a club to settle at since leaving Ipswich as a trainee in 2003. Since then 6 loan clubs and 3 free singings have taken place but now with 58 games under his belt for The Grecians and a goal every 4 games Logan has proved himself as an adequate striker, it’s the question now if he can step up to league football.

One to Watch

Adam Stansfield. The Local born striker is averaging an impressive goal every other game at the moment. Born up the road in Tiverton in '78 Stansfield started his career at local club Elmore in Gloustershire before been singed up at Yeovil before he was let go and free to join another local club in the form of Hereford on a free. 47 starts returned 24 goals and after two years he was signing for a free at St James Park and helped gain them promotion with 11 goals and with worries whether or not his place would be secured with the signing of Stewart Stansfield has returned Tisdale's faith him in having scored 4 in 8 and now only 3 off last year's total all 4 goals have come in the last 3 games.

Head to Head

Grimsby and Exeter have only crossed paths once in the last 17 year, that was in 2005 when the then non-league side knocked Town out of the FA Cup. Other than that historically Town do well against Exeter at home, but poorly away.
