Transfer Window Opens

WITH the January transfer window now open, Town boss Mike Newell is champing at the bit to start signing some new players as soon as he can. "I want to bring in as many as I can," Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph.
Newell has made no secret of the fact that current loan trio Adam Proudlock, Rob Atkinson and Jean-Paul Kalala are high on his list of requirements, as all three have been regulars in recent games for Town.
"Without them, we would have been in a sticky position right now and if we can make their deals more permanent, whether longer-term loans or permanent deals, that would help us because the three of them currently form the spine of the team."
With all three currently in loan deals, Newell will be looking to secure their services until at least the end of the season.
"With all those three, it depends on what the clubs concerned want to do. I have spoken to Dave Penney at Darlington and I have spoken to Oldham and there is a possibility that we might be able to do something. I am also waiting on Barnsley getting back to us."
Newell will not reveal his other transfer targets, but The Fishy understands that he is looking to bring at least two players from his former club Luton - who of course are now a relegation rival of Grimsby. Former Ipswich loan midfielder Liam Trotter will inevitably also be a target of Newell's, provided the former Luton boss can persuade Ipswich to part with the 20-year-old.
Town have very little time to turn things around, but Newell is hoping that an influx of new players during the month of January will provide competition for the rest of the squad, many of whom may well be fighting for their careers as league footballers.
"There are decent players at the club already and I am hoping they will improve by playing with better players."
