Three Year Deal

Widdowson Signs for Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/05/2009

LEFT back Joe Widdowson has signed a three year contract with the Mariners, enabling Town continuity in that position as the West Ham defender played there for the second half of last season on loan from Upton Park.

Town boss Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Joe has done really well for us and I'm pleased he’s agreed to join. It was always in our plans to make him an offer."

The 20-year-old will be moving to the Grimsby area from his current base in London, something Newell acknowledged was a big commitment to Town.

"You have to take into consideration he's moving out of London permanently," said the Town boss. "It’s a big commitment for a 20-year-old lad.

I think the chairman recognises the potential in a lad of 20 years too and that’s why it’s a long-term deal."

Widdowson was delighted to sign: "It’s very pleasing to have signed permanently. I've really enjoyed my time on loan and now I'll be here for the next few years.

"There were a couple of other clubs interested but there was no guarantee of regular football and I had been getting that with Grimsby.

"Having been here, I knew where I wanted to be. I know the place and the club, so it wasn't a difficult decision."

Grim Rob Says Widdowson looked a quality player when he was here, and it's a good signing for Town to have made. Let's hope we can secure some more of last season's loans on a permanent basis and we won't be in the same position we were this time last year with the risk of new, untried players not gelling.
