Sweeney: Sign Him Up! |
Where Do We Go From Here?

AFTER the near miss last season of almost disappearing into the non league, where do we go from here? For me the brilliant Town supporters were magnificent last season, along with numerous other people including ex-Town players who also played a big part in the campaign.

Already Manager Mike Newell has been active with the signings of Barry Conlon, Jamie Clarke, and there are more in the pipeline. The one player I really hope he can get on a permanent basis is Peter Sweeney, the classy midfield player. For me him and Barry Conlon turned Town round with the quality they both brought to the fight to stay in the league. Sweeney is one of those players from yesteryear, a Johnny Giles who can keep the ball in tight situations, he slowed the game down at the right times, hit a defence splitting ball to open up a chance for his strikers. Sweeney is a player in my eyes we badly need.
I just hope that our Chairman can push the boat out to sign the guy, but I think there will be a large cost involved, and he just might be out of our reach unfortunately.
Also we need to sign a good goalkeeper because Wayne Henderson has gone back to Preston which again is a great shame because besides being an extremely good goalkeeper he was also a character which you need to be in my opinion. There is nothing like being confident in your own ability and Henderson certainly had plenty of that indeed.
I also am pleased that Mike has signed Akpa Akpro on because in my eyes he is a good prospect, a big strong lad who once he gets a tough pre-season under his belt will be a big asset to the club. Do not worry there will I am sure be a lot of big signings in the next few weeks, players up and down the country will come to little old Grimsby on the east coast simply because of one person, Mike Newell, and we have got to take advantage of the guy's stature in football
I really think that this season is going to be the big one, because we certainly deserve a season where we can have hopefully have a good FA cup run, for instance. When is the last time we have met any of the big boys. Could you imagine playing Manchester United at Blundell Park, if only dreams could come true?!
I have to say that the most important task is to get out of this horrible league, it feels like an eternity that we have been in the doldrums.
The support is there from the Town supporters, they showed it at the end of the season, and I know a lot of fans came back because of the reductions in gate charges, but it certainly helped the cause. There are a lot of supporters who are expecting Town to be at least being in the Play Offs. Well why not I think you will all be surprised at the calibre of the new signings that are expected. I know that I certainly am.
Could this new season be the big fight back up the leagues? I wonder
