Feeney Joins Leeds

TOWN have missed out on one of Mike Newell's summer signing targets after he elected to join Leeds United instead. Cardiff striker Warren Feeney, who worked with Newell at Luton, was contemplating joining the Mariners before the Yorkshire giants stepped in to secure his services.

Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "I did have a number of conversations with Warren and he was interested in a move here - he was seriously considering it.

"He didn't dismiss it out of hand but when Leeds showed an interest, it was hard for us to compete with their financial resources.

  • Meanwhile another target midfielder Peter Sweeney, who played on loan with Grimsby last season, is close to a move to Blundell Park from Leeds. The two clubs just have to agree a transfer fee for the 24-year-old.

Sweeney told the Grimsby Telegraph: "There's a very high percentage I will be a Grimsby player soon - it's a case of when, not if, for me.

"I will go to pre-season training at Leeds on Thursday and then hope to sit down and discuss what's happening.

"I still have a year left on my contract there but I know I will be leaving this summer and it's a case of sorting that final year out."
