Rushden Kicked Out of League

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/06/2011

RUSHDEN and Diamonds have today been expelled from the Blue Square Bet Premier in a decision taken at the league's AGM. The decision was taken prior to a winding-up order which the Northamptonshire club face on Monday over unpaid debts.

The Blue Square League fined Diamonds and deducted five points from them last season, and this year have taken the dramatic step after the former Football League side were unable to fulfil their fixtures for the 2011/12 season.

It is a dramatic turnaround for a club formed in just 1992 after a merger between two local sides. The big-spending club enjoyed a four-year spell in the Football League, at the height of which they spent the 2003/04 season in League One, until they were relegated along with the Mariners.

Southport, who finished fourth from bottom of the Conference, have been reprieved.

If Rushden are to continue as a football club they will have to continue as a "Phoenix" side in the same way that Aldershot, Chester and Newport have done. Whether they have sufficient a bedrock of support to do so after a relatively short time in football, remains to be seen.
