Town Record First Win

GRIMSBY recorded their first win of the season with a nervous 2-1 victory over Cambridge at Blundell Park last night. The Mariners had an extra man for most of the game, but threw away the lead at 1-0 and only the woodwork prevented United from scoring a second equaliser.

Town made just one change from the side which drew with Newport at the weekend. Makofo came in for Coulson on the wing.

The U's started strongly and won a succession of corners.

The referee then sent off Cambridge's Dunk on 18 mins for a two-footed challenge on Artus.

Town created a bit of pressure with the extra man and from a corner the ball was flicked on by Duffy to Thompson, who headed it in on 29 mins.

Almost immediately Town conceded. Cambridge won a corner and the ball was crossed to Michael Wylde on the far post who struck it in on the half volley.

The first half ended 1-1.

Town had most of the possession in the early part of the second half but struggled with the final ball, Makofo in particular not making the most of good possession.

The deadlock and frustration was finally broken from yet another corner when Duffy's header was cleared from just behind the goal loan, which was awarded by the officials after a few seconds.

As the referee kept booking numerous players from both sides, Cambridge's biggest threat looked to come from set pieces with their aerial threat.

From one of these Jennings hit the post from about 30 yards out, and fortunately Town managed to clear it.

Town had chances in injury time to seal the game, but Elding wasted a total sitter with all the time in the world to make in 3-1.

The Mariners hung on to pick up three points.

Town's win lifted them away from the psychological position of bottom spot into mid-table. They next face erstwhile bogey side Darlo at Blundell Park before taking on early pace setters Gateshead on Bank Holiday Monday. .
