The Fall From Plaice - Part 8

JONNY Rowan was a massive prospect for the club when he moved up from the Youth Team in 2000. His first appearance brought a goal when he scored with his first touch against Wolves in the Worthington Cup.

A year later he was Lennie Lawrence's preferred forward aside Phil Jevons and the pair had helped fire Town to the summit of the Division One in the opening games of the 2001-02 season. He also started in the historic victory over Liverpool, although arguably like many he didn't really touch the ball in that game. Rowan was regarded by many as a player who could of gone on to much greater things with Grimsby or beyond, I seem to recall their being Premiership scouts watching him in his early days. It seemed we had a new Mendonca on our hands maybe? Nope! It wasn't to be as he became as injury prone as Owen Hargreaves which would crippled his Town career.

Rowan eventually left at the end of the 03/04 season and signed for Kidderminster Harriers on non-contract terms. He then moved on to Ossett Town and Kettering Town. By 2005 he had transferred to Conference North club Gainsborough Trinity, a club he remained with for a season before signing for amateurs Boston Town. He hit an impressive goal scoring record which earned a move to neighbours Boston United where he went on to win the club's Player Of The Season award for 2008. Rowan briefly returned to Boston Town for the 2009-10 season before retiring at the end of the year at the age of 28. He now concentrates his time on running his own coaching business JR Sports, as well as lending a hand in Town's community coaching scheme.
