Town Dip Continues

GRIMSBY slumped to their third successive defeat of a nightmare eight day period. The victors this time were Cambridge, a team supposedly with nothing to play for. The only goal of the game was a disastrous own goal by Tom Naylor in the first half.
It was a game of few chances for either side, and so a mistake proved the decisive moment of the game. As well as the defeat another injury to Sean Pearson was a massive blow for Town.
The starting line-up raised a few eyebrows. Brodie started as Hannah failed a late fitness test which meant Liam Hearn was a surprise substitute.
Frankie Artus was also a surprise starter after barely making the bench for weeks. The reason was Disley and Niven both missed out in midfield through injury. It meant Sean Pearson, himself not 100% fit after a recent knee injury, was given the skipper's armband.
Town had a good chance from a Devitt corner on 16, but Pearson headed wide at the far post.
On 25 Town shot themselves in the foot when Cambridge fired in a free kick and Naylor headed the well struck ball into his own net, but with no defenders around him.
Cambridge nearly added a second from a corner when McKeown dropped the ball but manage to save at the second attempt.
After the break Town had a good chance 13 minutes into the second half when Naylor broke clear and tried to chip the 'keeper who was way off his line but the ball went wide.
Liam Hearn came on with 25 mins to go for Brodie and Colbeck came on for Marshall. But Town didn't really ever look like scoring an equaliser and they didn't manage to get the draw their overall play probably deserved. 0-0 would have been a fairer scoreline.
Grimsby will have to dust themselves off for Tuesday and hope that some of the injured players have recovered for the visit to Nuneaton. After that there is a whole four days without a game before the Mariners head to Wembley and the FA Trophy clash with Wrexham.
