GRIMSBY made it a perfect Bank Holiday Weekend for the Mariners' faithful, netting a maximum six points from the two games over the period. The 3-1 win over Alfreton yesterday was followed up by a narrow 1-0 win in the televised game at Hyde yesterday.
Alex Rodman was the unlikely hero for the Mariners, coming off the bench to flick in a Joe Colbeck cross in one of the few clear-cut chances of the game.
Scott and Hurst shuffled their pack and Doig and Hatton came into the side.
Hyde had two good chances to score after 6 minutes but McKeown made a good save and then Disley cleared off the line.
Neither side had any clear chances until 30 minutes when John-Lewis broke following a defensive mistake and passed to Colbeck whose first time shot went wide.
An uninspiring first half ended 0-0.
McKeown had to turn over a shot on 55 minutes from Collins as the game began to open up a bit. Doig had to clear a shot off the line shortly afterwards when McKeown spilled it.
Grimsby finally broke the deadlock on 71 when Colbeck picked out substitute Rodman who slotted it past the 'keeper from inside the six yard box.
There were a couple of scares in the remaining 23 minutes of playing time. McKeown managed to palm a dangerous cross away from danger, but generally the Town defence was solid.
The Mariners held on for a 1-0 win in a scrappy game. It wasn't a great performance and they certainly didn't look like they are going to take the division by storm, but everyone associated with the club will be delighted with six points over the weekend, and the only goal conceded a meaningless late consolation goal in Saturday's home win with Alfreton.
