First the Worst, Second the best

PERHAPS it is a blessing but ever since Paul Hurst stepped up to the plate, in relation to how well we have been doing this season, things seem to have be on the up.

Players’ morale is at an all-time high, as our wins - since Paul Hurst becoming manager - have been high scoring. We may have conceded in two of those three but in Saturday's game against Aldershot, McKeown proved why he is our No. 1 keeper by making a brilliant save to stop us conceding from a penalty. Sam Hatton, who was looking for a way out, seems to have put his head back into training.

Paul Hurst has listened to our pleas for a formation change and he did make a change to a 4-4-2 - and look at the results:

  • Grimsby 3 - 1 Tamworth
  • Grimsby 5 - 2 Dartford
  • Chester 0 - 0 Grimsby (with 10 men for most of the second half)

Ok, the Chester game was a boring, nil-nil game but it was his first game in charge, so let’s put it down to first-game-nerves.

If we look at our most recent result of 3-0 win against Aldershot, it is an exact example of what potential our squad has, and it seems Hurst is exploiting it to its full extent. I have found that in the past we go too easy on, and have too low expectations of, lower league teams, such as Hyde and Halifax: this often leads to our losing the game. The Halifax game is a prime example - 4-0 before half time to a team that last season was playing the likes of Grantham and Gainsborough. Hopefully Hurst has noticed this and will play our best from the start for those games, as they all add up!!

Second place, is a place where I had hoped we would be from day one, but due to many complexities and complications we have had to wait. From these ‘Humble Hurst Beginnings’ we may be challenging Cambridge for top place - all I can say is that Tuesday’s fixture is going to be a real thrill of a game (too bad it’s a school night!!)
