Town Winning Streak Continues

GRIMSBY recorded their fifth successive league win and consolidated their second placed spot with a hard-fought win over a physical Halifax side at Blundell Park last night. The victory was boosted by Town's promotion rivals Barnet and Gateshead both dropping points.
A solitary set piece goal by Shaun Pearson proved the difference between the sides and was no more than Grimsby deserved after a first half in which they dominated. After the break Halifax pressed Town more, but they barely had a shot on target, and it was Grimsby who created the better chances on the break.
Scott Neilson, Harry Pell and Carl Magnay all returned to the side as Town but went back to 4-5-1 after the Oxford disappointment.
After a quiet 20 minutes Grimsby started to come into the game and John-Lewis should have done better when he headed over from a free kick.
On the half hour mark a Neilson long-range shot produced a top save from Glennon, then Shaun Pearson gave Town the lead on 40 when he rose from a corner to power the ball in the back of the net.
Halifax should have scored in first half stoppage time but Maynard missed a good chance in the six yard box.
Magnay limped off early in the second half, and Clay came on in the midfield holding role, which meant utility man Parslow went to right back.
Arnold nearly made it two with a cross-shot which the 'keeper tipped over for a corner, although Halifax improved in the second half and had most of the possession but Pell almost doubled Town's lead on 80 with a snap shot which went just wide.
Town had a few scares closing out the game but in the end held the visitors at arm's length to claim their fifth successive league win.
