Wood Seals Perfect Day

TOWN recorded their sixth win in seven games to move within a point of the summit of non-league football. The day was made even better by the fact that Bristol and Barnet both dropped points, the latter thanks to Grimbarian Bradley Wood's 94th minute penalty for Alfreton.

Town bossed the game throughout, with first half goals from Ollie Palmer and a Pearson header from a corner giving Town a deserved first half lead.

The biggest scare for Town came when the linesman gave a penalty for a foul by Toto, but the referee thankfully chose to overrule his decision. Video evidence suggests it was the correct decision but not many refs would have done so.

Paul Hurst chose to bring Jack Mackreth and Scott Brown back into the side. Mackreth had been suffering from illness and Brown was preferred to Clay in midfield after the long trip to Dover in midweek. It was a decision which soon paid dividends when Mackreth provided the cross for Palmer to flick the ball in past the 'keeper.

Town won a succession of corners in a first half of one way traffic and finally scored a rare set piece goal when Pearson rose to head the ball in from one of them.

Town held on to their lead comfortably in the second half, which McKeown making a couple of good saves to deny Welling when they did burst through.

The 600 Town fans, over 50% of the crowd, erupted into spontaneous celebration when the news came through from Barnet's game of the Alfreton equaliser, made especially sweet as it was at the hands of former fans' favourite Bradley Wood.

The teams looked two divisions apart which hopefully they will be next season. Grimsby were superior in every area of the pitch, and it was a much better display than that at Dover in midweek. For Town to get promoted though they still need Barnet to drop at least two points in their remaining five games. Even if Grimsby manage to win all of their five games they are not guaranteed to win the title.
