Macclesfield Strike Again!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/09/2015

GRIMSBY lost to Macclesfield for the fourth year running at Blundell Park. The Mariners fell a goal behind just before the break after totally dominating the first half. After half time Town continued to press but it was the Silkmen who doubled their score with a stunning strike by Kristian Dennis.

It meant that Grimsby have now gone four games without a win, a worrying trend that has seen the Mariners get a meagre return from their games this season. Town have outplayed their opponents in all but the Torquay game this season, but not got the rewards from matches that their efforts have deserved.

Paul Hurst made five changes to the side bringing Richard Tait, Toto Nsiala, Craig Clay, Jack Mackreth and Marcus Marshall into the starting XI.

Grimsby dominated the game from the off with Mackreth Town's biggest threat in the new look side and Bogle should have put Town 1-0 up but slipped when Mackreths's pass had put him clean through with the goal at his mercy.

Town had all the chances in the first half but Macclesfield scored just before the break with their only effort of note. Halls fired in a cross to the far post which was overhit and went towards Town's 'keeper who flapped at it and deflected into the patch of a Macclesfield player whose shot went wide but fell straight into the path of Dennis for a tap-in at the far post. It was another mistake from Town's 'keeper who has had a poor start to the season.

Town and Bogle in particular continued to miss all their chances and Macclesfield scored a second with their second attempt on goal. Dennis again was the scorer, blasting a stunning half volley past McKeown.

Grimsby had a strong bench but their introduction made little difference and the game came to a disappointing climax. Macclesfield had come to frustrate Town and their finishing was the difference between the two sides. Town failed to score for the first time this season, and Paul Hurst won't be keeping many of the players he brought in for Town's next game away at Boreham Wood.
