Town Rescue Point at Torquay

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/10/2015

GRIMSBY fought back from a goal down to rescue a point at Torquay thanks to an Omar Bogle penalty. Town had dominated the early stages of the game but went a goal down against the run of play. After a quiet middle part of the game Grimsby bounced back with an equaliser, finished strongly and could have won.

With other results generally going Grimsby's win it was not a bad point and keeps Town well in contention with the top few teams.

Paul Hurst unsurprisingly stuck with the team that played most of the 7-0 win over Halifax, the only change being Marcus Marshall who replaced the injured Monkhouse on the left wing.

Grimsby started prominently with Bogle a real handful for Torquay early in the game. McKeown was forced into two saves to deny the home side but generally it was Town who bossed the game.

Torquay scored in controversial circumstances. Grimsby failed to clear the ball and after a scramble in the box, Marsh bundled the ball over McKeown. There were shouts for handball in the lead up to the goal.

Torquay continued to frustrate Grimsby in the second half, but Town were handed a lifeline by the ref, who awarded a penalty after Torquay 'keeper Spiess brought down Bogle with the ball going inches wide of the post. The penalty looked slightly harsh on Torquay, as Bogle had flung himself to the floor, but the ref mystified everyone by only showing a yellow card. Bogle himself took the pen and sent the 'keeper the wrong way.

Mackreth and Pearson both had chances to win the game but in the end Town had to settle for a point.

Grimsby shaded it but probably didn't create enough clear-cut chances to deserve three points.

The Mariners now have a break from league action when they take on Harrogate in the FA Cup on Saturday.
