Amond: Hattrick
Amond: Hattrick

Amond Wonderland

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/01/2016

GRIMSBY coasted to a comfortable victory thanks to a hattrick by Irish striker Padraig Amond, including two perfectly executed looping headers. It didn't always look so easy though as Town failed to score in a first half, albeit one they dominated.

Town named an unchanged side and should have gone into an early lead when Amond set up Bogle but the latter's shot was charged down. On the half hour mark Clay played through Bogle who forced a save from the 'keeper.

The Mariners seemed reluctant to shoot on occasion, taking too many touches in front of goal, but Amond should have scored just before the break when he was played through with just the 'keeper to beat but his shot was saved.

After the break Town continued their dominance and their efforts eventually struck gold just after the hour mark. A corner was cleared back to Tait, who played a hopeful ball back into the box. Amond leapt for it and looped a perfectly executed header over the 'keeper. Within five minutes Town had put daylight between themselves and their hosts. Monkhouse crossed to the far post for Disley to knock the ball down into the path of Amond who drilled it home from close range.

Amond scored his hattrick and the pick of his goals with another looping header, from a Monkhouse cross, that sailed over the 'keeper into the net. The icing came on the cake came towards the end when Disley drilled a low shot into the net to make it four.

It was a comprehensive win for Town that was boosted by Cheltenham dropping two points.
