Point Gained in Bore Dore

GRIMSBY and Exeter draw a blank in a dull game at St James' Park. Town will be the happier of the two sides as there were periods of the game when they came under pressure and they had few chances of their own to mull over.

Town rarely threatened and only looked vaguely like scoring in the closing staging after the substitutions has changed the side somewhat.

Paul Hurst shuffled his already shuffled pack after the midweek cup game against Leicester. Josh Gowling came into central defence is place of Pearson, Zak Mills played at right back, meaning Ben Davies played up the field on the right wing. Berrett and Comley started in central midfield and Vose was placed on the left wing. Bogle and Tuton played up front.

Omar Bogle had Town's first chance but his header went straight to the 'keeper. At the other end McKeown has to tip the ball over his bar on 25 mins. Exeter almost scored when a great cross from Holmes just eluded Simpson. Dangerman Reid then had a good chance when he found himself on the ground with the ball bouncing around the box, but he poked the ball just wide from close range.

After the break Andrew's backpass lacked enough weight to reach McKeown. Reid had to react instantly and his lob fortunately clipped the top of the cross bar. The Exeter pressure continued, as Town were overrun in the middle of the park. although the Mariners occasionally threatened. Their set pieces, possibly the best hop of getting bodies in the box, were generally poor though, with a Bogle effort that sailed high into the stand, summing up Town's day.

Summerfield replaced Comley as Paul Hurst looked for more creativity from midfield, but it failed to make much difference. Vernon then came on for Tuton for a more physical presence up front and Town ended the game looking more comfortable. Bolarinwa came on for Vose late on and the winger always has a few good minutes in him. Other than a late corner though Town didn't really threaten the goal.

In the end it was a point gained. Town did not play well and three points would have been a travesty of justice in a game Exeter deserved to win.

The worry though is that Town have failed to score for three games and not scored a goal in open play in any of the last five games. The next three games are all against teams in the bottom half: Cambridge, Cheltenham and Yeovil.
