Town Bounce Back

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/08/2018

TOWN bounced back from the low of Forest Green with a high of a good away with at Macclesfield. The Mariners dominated the first half and went away thanks to a 25-yard blast from Jordan Cook. In the second half, Mitch Rose was sent off for a high challenge but Town defended strongly and Charles Vernam grabbed a late second.

Michael Jolley made just one change from the side which lost 4-1 to FGR with Jake Hessenthaler replacing Harry Clifton, and Town switched to 4-3-3 with Cook the central striker and Martyn Woolford and JJ Hooper playing in the wide positions. Paul Dixon dropped to a conventional left back position.

Grimsby were dominant in the first half, with Woolford prominent. The Mariners should have scored during a goalmouth scramble when Rose struck the woodwork and Hessenthaler’s follow up was well saved. Cook though gave Town the lead when he was given a yard of space, and made no mistake launching the ball in the top left-hand corner from 25 yards. Cook could have scored a second just before half-time but forced Taylor to tip it over.

Macclesfield came into the game more in the second half and was shown a straight red card after a high tackle on Arthur. The Mariners were then forced to defend in depth, leaving just one up front. The icing on the cake came when Vernon robbed the ball from a defender and ran along the byline drilling a shot low past the 'keeper.

It was a satisfying result that Town needed with some tough games coming up. The Mariners though have a cup diversion in midweek when they face Rochdale at Blundell Park. Town have yet to win a cup game on any sort since they returned to the Football League, and could certainly do with some spending money to boost the playing budget.
