Disaster! |
Hammer Blow for the Football Season

THE football season has been thrown into disarray after cabinet office minister Michael Gove announced today that fans would not be allowed to return to stadia at the start of October. A few trials of 1000 supporters had taken place last week at some grounds and clubs had planned for reduced capacities from the start of the month.
However, today's announcement could cause some clubs to face an intolerable financial burden after six months without much income. Clubs have sold season tickets and also built squads on the basis that fans would be able to return after a few games. With no date now pencilled in for a return, and it likely to be several months away, and quite possibly well into 2021.
The Premier League and Championships aside, the rest of English football including Leagues 1 and 2 and the whole of non-league game faces enormous financial uncertainty without some kind of rescue package. Money received from screening games online is a fraction for most of what they would receive by the paying spectator.
Has football been picked on unfairly? It means a lot to many people but is relatively unimportant economically so is a soft target for the government.
