The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Stian Thomassen

STIAN Thommasen was seen as quite a talent in Lillestrøm, but the competition for the youngster was too tough so the Norwegian ended in Hamar. This season Stian hasn't played as much as he have wanted for Hamarkameratene either.

Born: 08.08.1976 in Oslo
Height: 184 cm (6'00")
Weight: 82 kilos (12st 12lb)
Former clubs: Lillestrøm, FK Haugesund
Caps: 30 youth caps for Norway on U-17 - U-23 level

Recently Stian decided to begin studying as a full time student in Economics instead: "I must soon start to consider if I rather should retire. I have one year left on my studies - and a civil career will maybe be a bigger temptation than the football," said Stian who has a part time job in 'K-bank' in Hamar, in addition to being a footballer and a student. Maybe a hundred percent effort in Grimsby can get him back in the shape he was some years ago when he was a vital piece of Norway's U-21 team?

The Norwegian first division club Ham/Kam will travel to Ålesund this weekend without Stian who is travelling to Malmø on Sunday - Grimsby will of course meet Trelleborg on Monday - a match in which Stian will play. "I wouldn't have played in that match anyhow, so that doesn't play a part," said the defender who currently is a substitute for the team that is in fighting for promotion into the Norwegian top flight - Tippeligaen.

"I will use this chance to show the club what I can do. But it will also be fun to play a match again. I looking forward to it," said Thomassen who in one and a half seasons at Briskeby has picked up three red cards! The former Norwegian U-21 international doesn't use an agent - so it's his club Ham/Kam who have helped him with this possibility. The leader of Sport in Ham/Kam - Mr Truls Haakonsen explained: "We have contact with people in the market who know which teams need the right players. Stian is a good central defender, and I think he would fit well into the English First Division with his skills".

Hamarkameratene need to slim their squad, and it would surely be beneficial for the Hamar club to sell a defender who has one year left on his contract . Stian thinks that it is strange that he hasn't played more for Ham/Kam. "I think it's a strange situation. In the winter I was characterised as the most stable central defender at the club, but I was suspended for the first match in the league this year. Since then I have almost not played for the first team. But I know that I'm good enough to play at this level," explained Thomassen who now plays for Ham/Kam's second string in the 3rd division. It was Ham/Kam boss Cato Bakkemo who thought Stian was most stable. "The problem for Stian is that the other central defenders have played so well that he has never have gotten a chance," said Cato.

Next Target: Arne Vidar Moen
