Coyne Bids For Europe!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/05/2002

DANNY Coyne goes into Wales' friendly with Germany and is one of four keepers in a 24-man squad named to face Rudi Voeller's side next Tuesday knowing that Hughes will only name a maximum of three keepers when the European Championship Qualifiers begin in Finland in September.

Talking to the Grimsby Telegraph Coyne said: "It's nice to be called up again, especially for a game against a team like Germany." It would be great to win another cap against Germany, but I'm glad to be in the squad. I want to stay involved and try and establish myself as a squad player.

"With friendlies you can always chop and change and with four keepers it's easier for training - no-one gets left out."

"But when the European Championship games come round I think he'll be naming three keepers, or even only two. This game is it for the summer, but I can only stay in by doing as well as I can."

"I've been going into the ground and doing weights and stuff. I've also been training with the young kids and the YT's. There's been a few of them still there and I've been at Barnsley with Andy Rhodes (goalkeeping coach) for a couple of days."

"I do a lot of upper body work and circuits and it's benefitted me so much. I'm in better shape now than I've ever been."
