Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Fishy Sponsors Town's Youngest Player!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 27/08/2003

The Fishy in conjunction with GTISC sponsor two players' kits each season. When Gill McIlveen bid to have his son Will registered as a Grimsby Town player, we decided to sponsor his kit too.

Gill McIlveen has used his son's registration to raise additional funds for the club and Jostein Jensen has also contributed by sponsoring Will's away kit!

So the Fishy spoke to our newest player and asked him a few questions about football and life in general.

Fishy: Who in your opinion has been/is the greatest ever footballer?:

Will: It has to be Jack Lester. I first saw him fall over at Wycombe in 1998. I particularly enjoyed watching him falling over in Northampton's penalty area in the play-off final in 1998 which got us a penalty.

Fishy: Would you rather win the FA Cup or gain promotion?:

Will: The cup would be nice. We would get promoted the following season.

Fishy: If there was a sports-only quiz amongst the players at GTFC, who would your money be on to win?:

Will: I have no idea, since I've only just joined the club. Aidan Davison seems to be quite intelligent, though.

Fishy: Which daily newspaper do you read?:

Will: My dad gets The Times, The Guardian, and The Daily Telegraph. I read the football pages in all of them, but I rely on TV to know what's going on in the world.

Fishy: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?:

Will: We live next door to Sandringham, so I've got to say Her Majesty the Queen. I gave her some flowers last Christmas because my sister was too scared. Prince Phillip is quite a cool dude for an old man. He swears a lot!!

Fishy: What is the worst thing a fan has ever shouted at you or one of your team-mates during a match?:

Will: We played a team from Emneth Hungate, which is where Tony Martin comes from. A brother and sister who had married each other shouted something at me, which sounded like it was in Klingon. I think they wanted to foster me, or something.

Fishy: Who is your sporting hero (not football)?:

Will: The South African bowler, Ntini. When he took 10 wickets at Lords, he showed the world what anybody can do whatever background they come from.

Fishy: What are your interior design skills like?:

Will: Sorry, I don't understand the question.

Fishy: If you could ask Pele any question at all, what would it be?:

Will: When did you decide to do the dummy in the 1970 world cup final?

Fishy: What, in your opinion, has been the greatest ever line or scene from a TV comedy?:

Will: I've only seen it on dad's DVD, but it's from Fawlty Towers, when Basil says "For the first time in my life, I'm ahead." after winning a bet. And then it all goes wrong. This happens to my dad all the time.

Fishy: Who did you go as at the last fancy dress party you attended?:

Will: I went as Dracula to a 7-year-old's party. It cost Mum and Dad £10 for all the stuff. I won a 10p bubblegum. We call it the Lennie Lawrence birthday party.

Fishy: Can you speak a foreign language?:

Will: Nein. Not yet. But I have to do German next year.

Fishy: Would you rather watch a rugby league match, a golf tournament,or a race meeting?:

Will: None. I would fake an illness, and play on my play station.

Fishy: Who has been the best foreign player to grace the premiership?:

Will: He hasn't played yet, because nobody has signed him,but he's a 17-year-old Portuguese called Rui Gomez. We watched him on Sky in the Under 17s European championships.

Fishy: If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be?:

Will: My dad. I'd like to be able to try and assemble a wardrobe from MFI, and be allowed to swear every 10 seconds without being told off.

Fishy: Have you kept a programme from the first ever match of your professional career?:

Will: It hasn't happened, yet. But it will on May 8th 2004 when we play Tranmere in the last game of the season and I score our 100th goal.

Fishy: If you could play a match as a part of any team from history, which side would you choose?:

Will: Grimsby v Northampton, 1998. Or Brazil v Italy 1970.

Fishy: Which sporting occasion would you not watch, even if you were paid to do so?:

Will: Manchester United playing anyone.

Fishy: What would be your preferred playing kit?:

Will: Black and white stripes. What else?

Fishy: If you had to appear on 'Mastermind', what would be your specialist subject?:

Will: Recognising Town player's autographs.

Fishy: Who is the biggest comedian at the club?:

Will: No idea, but it's not Grovesie.

Fishy: Who does it most for you...Jordan, Jennifer Aniston or Christina Aguilera?:

Will: It has to be Jordan, because they're a low budget team. I don't know who the others are.

Fishy: What has been the best birthday present you ever had?:

Will: I like any birthday presents!

Fishy: If they made a film of your life, who would you want to play you?:

Will: Bart Simpson.

Fishy: Are women difficult to please?:

Will: Mum says ask my dad, and dad says ask my mum.

Fishy: What has been the greatest ever winning goal scored at Wembley, apart from Wayne Burnett's and Kevin Donovan's, of course?:

Will: Take your pick from any of Clive Mendonca's.

Fishy: Do you always wear the same brand of boots for matches, or do you chop and change from season to season?:

Will: Dad wears Adidas and he's crap. That's why I wear Nike.

Fishy: Which one of your former team mates has gone on to play at the highest level?:

Will: My dad whinges on and on and on about the famous players he played with or against. I play with some good players in my team, so we'll have to wait and see.
