Premier League Cash Jackpot!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/04/2004

THE Premier League have sold their TV rights for a record fee of 250 million pounds for overseas rights, a substantial rise on the 180 million pounds for the 2001-04 overseas rights.

The premier league gained the increase by marketing their rights themselves, rather than use a marketing company who would pay them a block payment and sell on the rights to TV companies.

The Observer in its report said; "contracts had already been signed in most areas of the world where the premier league was popular, such as Scandinavia and Asia, where ESPN Star Sports has agreed to pay almost 100 million pounds for the rights."

Other reports do not confirm this but it seems likely to be true considering the amounts quoted.

( Overseas TV viewers will probably not be pleased by the sale to ESPN who appear to screen advertising interspersed with sport but one would hope that with this new deal ESPN will get commentators who everyone can understand. Tommy Smythe's English is not what it should be)

The December deal with the European Commission (your un-elected masters) regarding the sale of TV rights in the UK was quoted as a great reduction to the previous deals and the premier league is pleased with this new deal for overseas rights!

There will be very little flowing down to the Nationwide clubs if history is the measure.
