Clare Set to Return

By: Richard Lord
Date: 21/01/2001

Former Republic of Ireland under-21 international Daryl Clare could soon make a first team appearance for Grimsby Town as Lennie Lawrence's striking options become increasingly stretched.

It is now certain that David Nielsen has played his last game as a Mariner and will return to FC Copenhagen, leaving only Livingstone and Jeffrey as Town's fully fit recognised strikers.

Lawrence has not yet dismissed the re-emergence of the 22-year old forward to first team action, saying "I'm not ruling out him coming back and going in to the team."

"If ever he's going to make anything for us, it will be after his time at Cheltenham." the Town boss told the Evening Telegraph. "What I don't want to do is bring him back and put him in the reserves because he's in between the youngsters who aren't ready for first team football in the league, and our first division team."

Clare is due to return to Blundell Park at the end of the month after failing to find the back of the net so far during his time at Whaddon Road. Cheltenham boss Steve Cotterill has expressed his interest in Clare but is unlikely to be able to finance any move.

Clare's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and Grimsby's boss Lennie Lawrence has to decide whether to renew the out-of-favour Town striker's contract and offer him a new deal which will keep him at the club.
