Dagenham v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 17/01/2008

WITH all this optimism around the place what would a defeat to newly promoted Dagenham and Redbridge do to the confidence of this small, fragile squad?

The Opposition

Overview

In the league and enjoying the company the Daggers lay 22nd, one above Mansfield, with a two point gap between themselves and the Stags. A win could at best move them up three places to 19th and ease the butterflies now culminating in the stomachs of all the Eastenders. With only 2 wins in 16 league games times are desperate at Victoria Road (no way am I bothering to type the paragraph that is the stadium's official name). The early run of form at the start of the season collecting the majority of points the Daggers have acquired so far makes for bleak reading with only a minuscule amount of teams in the league having a worse run of form at this moment in time. All meaning Town have a chance of taking something from the capital but as usual there's a snag: Dag and Red haven't played at home in a while and are expecting a big crowd for the game.

The Team
The former Peterborough and Barnet manager John Still (above) has been in charge since April 1st 2004 and has 79 wins under his belt in all 185 games he has taken charge of. The ever experienced Anthony Roberts is the ever present steward of the defence with nearly 300 appearances since his departure from QPR as a trainee. In defence the well travelled (Bristol R, Sheff Wed, West Ham and Hereford) Anwar Uddin (left) controls the back line with fellow defender Scott Griffiths. Up front Strevens (see below) and Paul Benson have created a fairly accurate partnership that has kept Dagenham's goals for count slowly but surely ticking over.

Key Player
Ben Strevens of Edgware has trawled around the vast array of non-league football first at Slough then Crawley and finally St Albans. Since signing from Crawley at the end of 2006 he has managed to grab 11 this season alone and whether or not he will stay at the club is the subject of much speculation during the transfer window. Speed and a quick reaction time have helped him to become a great playmaker and an essential member of a squad desperately trying to save their league position

Team News

TownDagenham

  • Ciaran Toner's hamstring is troubling him again, meaning the Ulsterman will miss the game.

  • Martin Butler is suffering from a back injury which will cause him to miss out.

  • Neither player would have started anyway so Town are likely to be unchanged from the team which beat Wrexham, which means Danny Boshell may have to settle for a place on the bench again.
  • Striker Chris Llewellyn serves a one-match ban while Neil Taylor is doubtful with a knock.

  • Daggers have just signed midfielder Peter Gain from Peterborough and striker Shabazz Baidoo from Queens Park Rangers.
