THE club is in a mess on and off the pitch with the stadium looking dead in the water thanks to one of the worst councils in Britain. With a team who fail to perform and confidence at an all time low what we really didn't need was to play against one of the best teams in the league.

The Opposition

Overview

The Quakers have been one favourites to go up for the last two seasons. A well established club with a good setup and the problems with the past now relatively straightened, the guys from County Durham may well see this as their season to make the advance to League One. Darlington lie third in the league just two points behind the early leaders Wycombe in the midst of this month Darlington found themselves playing Wycombe and second placed Bradford in a week and came out of both games with a total of 4 points winning against Bradford and extending their current unbeaten run to 7. After going so close to promotion last year, losing to Rochdale in the play-off semi finals on penalties, many in Darlington will hope this will be their year and so far nothing this season has really showed that anything else will happen but promotion.

The Team

When Stockport were promoted last season via the play-offs manager David Penny (above) must have believed it was that team he wanted to emulate as he went on a right shopping splurge across at Edgeley Park. Adam Griffin, David Poole and Adam Proudlock were all snapped up on a free. While Robin Hulbert also agreed a contract with Penney and joined from Port Vale. The only problem Darlington fans must have been worrying about was the departure of last seasons top goal scorer, Tommy Wright and though they got a healthy £100,000 for him when he signed for Aberdeen the 13 goals he scored last season weren't close to being matched by anyone else in last year's team. The closest would be the York-born striker Pawell Abbott who has picked up the dreaded Newcastle disease NOT THE REAL AVIAN VARIETY but the one that inflicts many of the north eastern cities talismans the likes of Johnny Wilkinson, Michael Owen and David Sears who then accumulate injury after injury threatening their careers as sportsmen. The striker hopes to be back after the New Year after damaging an ankle ligament in training. Many Darlington fans now may be wondering who will provide the goals but with Billy Clarke getting 7 already it would seem that he would be the man ready to replace the 2 aforementioned strikers but 4 of his goals are accredited to the 6-0 win at Macclesfield. This year they seem to be coming from all corners of the squad with 10 players already on the score sheet and 7 of them scoring 2 or more goals.

One to Watch

Franz Burgmeier. The midfielder from Liechtenstein has proved an instant success since his signing in August from Swiss champions FC Basle. His popularity is so high in Darlo that many fans travelled to the Millennium Stadium to support the small country of Liechtenstein in their World Cup qualifying match against Wales just because of him. Playing nine games already this season he has managed to score 2 and has 5 assists to his name making him the lead assist in the team. The midfield is quick and he can pick a pass perfectly and is able to stamp his authority in the midfield battle and will cause us a lot of trouble against our joke of a defence.
