The Opposition

Considering the club is one of the oldest in the world they don't have many trophies to their name and are most famous for their agonising semi final day against Middlesbrough and bloody David Elleray! Other then that they have bumped around the lower divisions like a disinterested pinball waiting for that final tilt to end their misery.

Well after they had finished moaning about Danny North's homage to Jack Lester they found themselves missing out narrowly on a play-off spot. Well I say narrowly I mean a place just out of the playoffs but 9 points short of Wycombe in 7th.

This season they find themselves in a very similar position but instead of taking affront to our local born striker they decided to have their own mini tournament against Droylsden which they just narrowly won after 4 matches, 2 abandoned, a random goal to equalise and a hell of a lot of chest puffing Chesterfield came out the other side bruised exhausted and out of puff winning just 1 of their next 5 games. Since then their season has improved and though the play-offs are still a heavy ask it is possible if they knuckle down.

Ernie Moss, the Macca of the benty spire folks he's played 469 games for the Spireites in 3 spells spanning 20 years (thank you Wiki) he is also the clubs leading goal scorer with a 162 league goals and his commitment too the club from the 60's to the late 80's will be forever cherished by Chesterfield.

Lets face it rubbish held together by Blue Tak, Duct Tape, Pritt Stick and Sellotape (that seems to be every sort of adhesive brand I can think of) A lot of the ground was banned from being used during a time while the club struggled to stay a float it was left neglected and left to fend for itself. The open terracing is hardly inviting on a cold rainy night but it will still tug on a few heartstrings when Chesterfield relocates to their new stadium in a couple of seasons.

It's like Porridge it's the little victories that keep you going. The semi final exit makes most fans proud but also a little envious with what should have been theirs. The fans are also proud of how they held of the grim reaper in a time where administration almost seems common place back in the days when we were half good Chesterfield were staring the clubs end in the face. A lot of hard work persistence and little miracles helped stopped the death of such an old club.

Bright the club are at the right end of the table and aiming for the play-offs rather then safety and a new stadium in the centre of town rather then an industrial estate next to a bypass all is the key to a bright future for a club who are always vying for support against their bigger rivals in Sheffield.

Gordon Banks the England legend pulled on the blue of Chesterfield 23 times as he started his career in the mid 50's before moving to Leicester in 1959.

Jack Lester what a shock! He can run and he can fall over what a bloody marvel he was. The former Mariner learnt his diving trade at Blundell Park and though a slight breeze see's him diving quicker then French and British submarines when they see each other his talent for those strong intelligent runs hasn't diminished. He is also yet to score against us in his return to League Two and has also managed 5 goals in his last 6 matches. Am I tempting fate? Probably.
