Town Say No to Posh!

PETERBOROUGH have had an offer for Town defender Ryan Bennett rejected by the GTFC board. Posh had made an informal enquiry several weeks ago for the 19-year-old Town captain, and were told they would have to offer a six figure sum.

This week they have come back to Grimsby with a formal offer for an undisclosed value, but which chairman John Fenty dismissed without hesitation.

Fenty told the Grimsby Telegraph: "It's a derisory bid and the club will not be accepting it at all."

Posh director of football Barry Fry has his sights set though on getting Bennett who he has described a a perfect player for Posh, and it's likely he'll return with a better offer.

"He is a young, hungry and determined player who perfectly fits the bill of what the manager looks for in a Posh player," Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph. "Darren and Kevin Russell have both watched the lad and been very impressed with him."

London-born Bennett, who has already been capped at England U-19 level, was Town's Player of the Year, and was made captain by Mike Newell shortly after his arrival at Blundell Park.

Rumours are circulating about a number of other clubs who are supposedly interested in Town's captain, who has two years left on his contract.

Grim Rob Says Well done to the club for rejecting this offer. The cost of relegation is incalculable to the club and the Mariners need to have at very least a squad good enough not to be sucked into another fight for survival next season. It's pointless selling Bennett for anything less than the cost of getting a replacement (who may not be as good), plus a substantial margin to strengthen the team in other areas and help pay off the club's debts.
