Town Win 5-Goal Thriller

GRIMSBY continued their unbeaten run to five games, their best since returning to the Football League, with a fine 3-2 win at Cheltenham. Two goals by Siriki Dembele plus one from Collins sealed the points, although there were some nervous moments in the closing stages as the home side threw everything at Town.

Russell Slade stuck with the side which drew 0-0 with Crawley Town, keeping faith in his players despite the disappointing result and performance.

Town started strongly and dominated the early stages of the game. Dembele put Town in front with an early goal after the ball bounced to him inside the box and he drilled it low into the net.

The lead did not last long and resulted from a Cheltenham corner, which was initially cleared but the ball came back and was met by the unmarked Pell to head in at the far post.

Both sides had chances but it was Town who went in front again with two goals just before half time. Collins put Town in front with a scrappy goal leading from a corner, and went further in front with a quality goal from Dembele. Jones picked out the diminutive winger's run into the box, and Dembele deftly jumped into the flight of the ball to place it past the 'keeper.

Cheltenham came back into the game after the break as they looked to overcome a two-goal deficit. Dixon limped off with an injury, which meant an unexpected replacement when Zak Mills came on.

Town looked to have negotiated their way to the whistle but Winchester pulled a goal back with 5 minutes of normal time to go to set up a frenetic final 10 minutes. Town almost threw it away when Nigel Atangana hit the woodwork in added time but Grimsby held on for the points. It brings to an end a dismal run of results against Cheltenham and sets up Town for an assault on the top 7.
