Coyne voted Player of the Month for January!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 03/02/2002

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Danny Coyne has officially won the Professional Football Association Fans Player of the Month award for January. The Welshman beat off stiff competition from Wolves' Alex Rae to win the award that might just grab Mark Hughes' attention.

The presentation will be made at Blundell Park on Saturday 16 February on the pitch before the crucial game against Sheffield United. Speaking to the official website gtfc.co.uk the shot-stopper said: "It's a great honour to be voted player of the month.

"The fans here are brilliant, they always acknowledge me before, during and after a game" he added. Gaining the award means that the Prestatyn-born keeper qualifies to possibly become Player of the Season. Any of the eight players who win the monthly award have the chance to win the annual award.

For those who started voting for Danny in the early stages of the month will remember he climbed up from sixth place to top spot in a short space of time, before briefly falling to second. He regained top spot just at the right time to earn the award.

This will hopefully help Coyne grab the attention of Wales boss Mark Hughes. Danny's form over the last season and a half has been nothing short of breath-taking and his efforts must surely be rewarded with another Welsh cap.

The Grimsby fans should be congratulated for their efforts in helping Danny become the Division's Number One player of the month!
