Is football a business or a sport?

Decision Day!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/08/2003

TODAY could be the last of the signings that Paul Groves will be making prior to the season if all goes according to plan. He is expecting a decision today on three players in the frame.

Laurens Ten Heuvel, Jason Crowe and Mike Edwards futures will be settled during the next 48 hours. Crowe and Edwards are both free agents while Sheffield United are prepared to release Ten Heuvel for nothing.

The problem is of course the matter of money but Groves will be doing all he can to convince the three that Blundell Park is the place for them.

Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph; "We are trying to sign all three. If we can manage to secure the ones we're working on that will finish off the budget. We'll have used all the money and then some. We want them all done by the weekend, whether we can or not is another matter, but we're hopeful."

On Ten Heuvel he said; "We want him to be there against Plymouth. Sheffield United paid money for him but, with the market as it is, they're prepared to let him go for free. It's just a case of getting down to the nitty gritty. Technically he's good, he's powerful and he can play with his back to goal and bring in other players. He'll drag defenders into areas they don't want to be in. He's quite clever in that way."

"Him and Mick have played two games together where they've had just over an hour each time to forge a partnership. The makings are there, it just depends if we can get it going."

Groves is refusing to say who will take over the skipper's armband with McDermott and Alan Pouton both sidelined. "There's still one or two questions to be answered and I'm sure they'll be sorted in the next couple of days. We'll leave announcing the skipper until the last minute and speak to the player concerned first."
